ChatGPT mobile still remembers this Windows desktop as DESKTOP-BQNFJCH, but Codex Remote no longer connects after the recent Codex desktop update. This previously worked for the user. Restarting the phone and fully restarting Codex desktop did not restore the connection.

The desktop app is logged in and running, but the fresh Windows desktop logs show remote_control being removed before the app-server starts and show zero remote connections after bootstrap.

Error Message

Note: the app-server error messages say remote_control is a supported feature, but the enabled feature list after restart does not include remote_control. Codex Remote Windows Regression Report

Date: 2026-05-15, America/Phoenix

Summary

ChatGPT mobile still remembers this Windows desktop as DESKTOP-BQNFJCH, but Codex Remote no longer connects after the recent Codex desktop update. This previously worked for the user. Restarting the phone and fully restarting Codex desktop did not restore the connection.

The desktop app is logged in and running, but the fresh Windows desktop logs show remote_control being removed before the app-server starts and show zero remote connections after bootstrap.

Environment

  • Host OS: Windows
  • Host computer name shown in ChatGPT mobile: DESKTOP-BQNFJCH
  • Codex desktop package: OpenAI.Codex_26.513.3673.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
  • Codex desktop version: 26.513.3673.0 16gLaJKcDHVHbccbo9ayPsopB6gA1pZB888m8q6g2T8x6kBm
  • Login status: Logged in using ChatGPT
  • Config file: C:\Users\Ryan\.codex\config.toml
  • Config currently includes remote_connections = true
  • Config currently does not include remote_control = true after restart/update

Expected Behavior

ChatGPT mobile should connect to the remembered Codex Remote host DESKTOP-BQNFJCH, or the desktop app should provide a clear reconnect/pairing flow for this Windows host.

Actual Behavior

ChatGPT mobile still has DESKTOP-BQNFJCH in its memory and prompts the user to connect to Codex Remote, but the connection fails. Device auth was attempted and did not fix the connection. Restarting both the phone and desktop app did not fix it.

Reproduction Steps

  1. Update/restart Codex desktop on Windows.
  2. Open ChatGPT mobile.
  3. Attempt to connect to remembered Codex Remote host DESKTOP-BQNFJCH.
  4. Connection does not complete.
  5. Re-run ChatGPT auth/device authorization.
  6. Connection still does not complete.
  7. Fully restart phone and Codex desktop.
  8. Connection still does not complete.

unsupported feature enablement `auth_elicitation`: currently supported features are apps, memories, mentions_v2, plugins, remote_control, tool_search, tool_suggest, tool_call_mcp_elicitation

Why This Looks Like A Regression

  • User reports this phone-to-desktop Codex Remote flow worked before the update.
  • ChatGPT mobile still remembers the Windows desktop host.
  • Local enrollment records still exist for the host.
  • The Windows desktop app starts and is logged in.
  • The fresh desktop log explicitly removes remote_control before starting app-server.
  • The fresh desktop log reports zero remote connections.

Official Documentation Context

OpenAI ChatGPT release notes for May 14, 2026 describe Codex on mobile and state that, currently, the phone can connect to Codex running on macOS:

https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes

If Windows host support was intentionally removed or is not currently supported, the app should not leave a stale remembered Windows host in ChatGPT mobile without a clear explanation. If Windows support is expected, this looks like the desktop app is stripping remote_control during startup.

Requested Outcome

Please clarify whether Codex Remote host support is currently expected to work on Windows.

If yes, please investigate why remote_control is removed before app-server startup on Windows package 26.513.3673.0, leaving ChatGPT mobile unable to connect to an existing remembered Windows host.

If no, please provide a clear UI message in ChatGPT mobile and/or Codex desktop explaining that the remembered Windows host cannot currently be used for Codex Remote.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

What is the expected behavior?

Codex Remote Windows Regression Report

Date: 2026-05-15, America/Phoenix

Summary

ChatGPT mobile still remembers this Windows desktop as DESKTOP-BQNFJCH, but Codex Remote no longer connects after the recent Codex desktop update. This previously worked for the user. Restarting the phone and fully restarting Codex desktop did not restore the connection.

The desktop app is logged in and running, but the fresh Windows desktop logs show remote_control being removed before the app-server starts and show zero remote connections after bootstrap.

Environment

  • Host OS: Windows
  • Host computer name shown in ChatGPT mobile: DESKTOP-BQNFJCH
  • Codex desktop package: OpenAI.Codex_26.513.3673.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
  • Codex desktop version: 26.513.3673.0 16gLaJKcDHVHbccbo9ayPsopB6gA1pZB888m8q6g2T8x6kBm
  • Login status: Logged in using ChatGPT
  • Config file: C:\Users\Ryan\.codex\config.toml
  • Config currently includes remote_connections = true
  • Config currently does not include remote_control = true after restart/update

Expected Behavior

ChatGPT mobile should connect to the remembered Codex Remote host DESKTOP-BQNFJCH, or the desktop app should provide a clear reconnect/pairing flow for this Windows host.

Actual Behavior

ChatGPT mobile still has DESKTOP-BQNFJCH in its memory and prompts the user to connect to Codex Remote, but the connection fails. Device auth was attempted and did not fix the connection. Restarting both the phone and desktop app did not fix it.

Reproduction Steps

  1. Update/restart Codex desktop on Windows.
  2. Open ChatGPT mobile.
  3. Attempt to connect to remembered Codex Remote host DESKTOP-BQNFJCH.
  4. Connection does not complete.
  5. Re-run ChatGPT auth/device authorization.
  6. Connection still does not complete.
  7. Fully restart phone and Codex desktop.
  8. Connection still does not complete.
