Overview

The Journal is Ballast's editorial content channel — a health magazine/digest that promotes evidence-backed products through long-form articles, ingredient deep-dives, and study breakdowns. It is a separate design discipline from the e-commerce store.

Purpose

  • Build trust through expert content (shows we understand the science, not just sell it)
  • Drive SEO via health/supplement research articles
  • Promote catalog products in context ('why we carry Magnesium L-Threonate')
  • Build a subscriber base for the monthly health digest

Two distinct deliverables

A. Journal landing page (e-commerce site — near-term)

A clean article grid that inherits the V8 design system. Stitch design spec in data/workspace/STITCH_PAGES.md (to be added). Shows:

  • Article cards with cover image, category tag, headline, author, read time
  • Filter by category: Perimenopause · Sleep · Nervous System · Ingredients · Research
  • Featured/hero article at top
  • Newsletter signup strip

B. Article interior template (specialist work — post-launch)

A purpose-built editorial template designed by a specialist in health/magazine editorial design. This is NOT the same as the store design — it needs:

  • Long-form reading typography (correct measure, leading, drop caps)
  • Pull-quote layouts
  • Data visualization integration (charts, study diagrams)
  • Author bio + credentials block
  • Inline evidence callout boxes ('STUDY: Slutsky 2010')
  • Full-bleed editorial photography
  • Related products inline (non-intrusive, contextual)

Talent requirements

This issue tracks the need to find and brief specialist collaborators:

  • Editorial designer — specialist in health/medical publishing or premium magazine editorial. Not a generalist web designer. Should have portfolio showing long-form article design, typography at scale, editorial hierarchy.
  • Health/science writer(s) — able to read PubMed papers and write for an intelligent 40-year-old non-clinician. Should understand FTC/FDA claim restrictions for supplements.
  • Medical illustrator — for anatomical diagrams, molecular structures, data visualizations turned into editorial art. Look for portfolio showing: nervous system maps, cellular mechanism diagrams, hormone pathway illustrations.
  • Content editor — maintains editorial voice, approves claims, ensures FTC compliance across all content.

Content strategy

Each Journal issue covers one ingredient or health topic:

  1. The mechanism (what it does in the body, with diagram)
  2. The evidence (key studies, effect sizes, limitations)
  3. The product(s) (what we carry that delivers it correctly)
  4. What the industry gets wrong about it

Files

  • data/workspace/STITCH_PAGES.md — will contain Journal landing page spec
  • data/workspace/STITCH_V8_LIGHT.md — base design system to inherit

extent analysis

TL;DR

To move forward with the Journal project, identify and brief specialist collaborators, including an editorial designer, health/science writer, medical illustrator, and content editor.

Guidance

  • Review the talent requirements to understand the necessary skills and expertise for each role.
  • Develop a clear brief for each specialist collaborator, outlining the project's goals, objectives, and expectations.
  • Utilize the provided design system (STITCH_V8_LIGHT.md) as a foundation for the Journal landing page and article interior template.
  • Ensure that the content strategy is well-defined, covering key aspects such as mechanism, evidence, products, and industry misconceptions.

Example

No specific code snippet is applicable in this case, as the issue focuses on project planning and talent acquisition.

Notes

The success of the Journal project relies heavily on finding the right specialist collaborators and providing them with clear guidance and expectations.

Recommendation

Apply a thorough briefing process to ensure that all collaborators understand the project's requirements and goals, which will help to build a strong foundation for the Journal's success.
