Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Despite being in Bypass Permission Mode, Claude will still always require manual permissions for editing its' own memory files (which it should optimally do constantly and is fairly low risk, which makes this very annoying) aswell as updating its' own skill files.... For whatever reason the "Always allow edits of this kind" option does not show up here...

What Should Happen?

At least give us the option to always allow memory & skill edits.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Ask Claude to change its memory settings/have it do it automatically while working in a larger plan
  2. It goes ahead and requires your manual permission

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue can be mitigated by modifying the permission settings or the Bypass Permission Mode configuration to allow Claude to edit its own memory and skill files without manual intervention.

Guidance

  • Review the Bypass Permission Mode documentation to ensure it is correctly configured to allow automatic edits of memory and skill files.
  • Check if there are any additional permission settings or flags that need to be enabled to allow Claude to edit its own files without manual permission.
  • Consider submitting a feature request to add an "Always allow edits of this kind" option for memory and skill file edits.
  • Investigate if the Anthropic API or VS Code Extension have any limitations or restrictions that may be causing the issue.

Example

No code snippet is provided as the issue does not contain sufficient technical details to create a relevant example.

Notes

The issue may be related to the specific configuration of the Bypass Permission Mode or the Anthropic API, and further investigation is needed to determine the root cause. The lack of error messages or logs makes it difficult to provide a more specific solution.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Modify the permission settings or Bypass Permission Mode configuration to allow Claude to edit its own memory and skill files without manual intervention, as this is the most likely way to mitigate the issue given the current information.
