Fix / Workaround

Critical data loss from the user perspective Long conversations with important context become inaccessible Affects paid subscribers who rely on conversation continuity No workaround found — refreshing, restarting the app, and switching to web version do not restore the history

  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Summary Renaming a chat causes the entire conversation history to disappear from view. The model starts the conversation as if from scratch. Environment

Platform: Claude Desktop App for Windows 11 + Claude Web (claude.ai) Account type: Paid (Pro/Team) Both desktop app and web version show identical behavior — confirmed same account

What Should Happen?

Steps to Reproduce

Have a long ongoing conversation in a chat In the chat list (left sidebar), click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to the chat name Click the pencil (edit) icon to rename the chat Enter a new name and confirm Observe the chat view after renaming

Expected Behavior The chat history remains fully visible and accessible after renaming. Actual Behavior

The entire chat history disappears from view The model responds as if starting a new conversation with no prior context When asked, the model confirms it cannot see the full history — only a very brief summary (approximately 10 words) of the previous conversation The model is unable to restore or display the lost history

This message (screenshot) appears from time to time, but I don't remember if I saw it at the time the chat conversation disappeared after it was renamed.
