Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Every Cowork session crashes immediately on the first message with:

Something went wrong Claude Code process exited with code 1 You can restart the conversation from an earlier message.

This affects both new Cowork sessions and existing sessions (confirmed by attempting to resume a session from 11 days ago — same crash). Regular (non-Cowork) Claude projects on claude.ai work normally.

This appears related to issue #46029 but differs in two key ways:

  1. Newer build (1.3036.0 vs. 1.1617.0 reported there)
  2. Existing sessions also crash (issue #46029 reported existing sessions resumed fine)

What Should Happen?

Expected Behavior Cowork session should accept the message and respond normally.

Actual Behavior Process exits with code 1 on first message. "Go back" and "Try again" buttons shown but retrying produces the same error.

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue can be potentially resolved by investigating and addressing the differences between the current version (1.3036.0) and the previous working version, focusing on changes that might affect Cowork sessions.

Guidance

  • Review the changelog or release notes for version 1.3036.0 to identify potential changes that could cause the crash in Cowork sessions.
  • Compare the behavior of Cowork sessions in the current version (1.3036.0) with that in the version reported in issue #46029 (1.1617.0) to understand the regression.
  • Attempt to isolate the issue by testing Cowork sessions with different parameters or settings to see if the crash is consistent across all scenarios.
  • Consider reaching out to the developers or community for more information on known issues or workarounds related to version 1.3036.0 and Cowork sessions.

Notes

The lack of specific error messages or logs limits the ability to provide a precise fix. The issue seems to be related to a regression introduced in a newer version of Claude Code, specifically affecting Cowork sessions.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Given the information provided, it's reasonable to suspect that the issue is related to the newer version of Claude Code. If possible, reverting to a previous version where Cowork sessions were known to work, or waiting for an update that addresses this regression, might be the most straightforward workaround until a fix is available.
