Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

After updating Claude Desktop to the latest version, every prompt submitted in any Cowork project or conversation immediately returns:

"Something went wrong — Claude Code process exited with code 1. You can restart the conversation from an earlier message."

This happens 100% of the time, across all projects and all new conversations. The issue persists after:

  • Fully quitting and relaunching the app
  • Running rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/session-storage and relaunching
  • Downloading a fresh installer from claude.com/download and reinstalling

The Chat tab appears unaffected. Only Cowork is broken.

What Should Happen?

Claude cowork should be able to process prompts.

Additional Information

This regression appeared immediately after updating to the latest Claude Desktop version. The issue is 100% reproducible and affects all Cowork sessions. A clean reinstall from the latest installer at claude.com/download did not resolve it.

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue can likely be resolved by investigating the compatibility of the latest Claude Desktop version with the Opus model and potentially downgrading to a previous version that worked.

Guidance

  • Verify that the issue is specific to the Opus model by testing with other models, if possible.
  • Check the release notes of the latest Claude Desktop version for any known issues or breaking changes related to Cowork or the Opus model.
  • Consider reaching out to the Anthropic API support team for assistance, as the issue may be related to the API or its interaction with the Claude Desktop application.
  • If a previous version of Claude Desktop is known to work, attempt to install that version to see if the issue is resolved.

Notes

The exact cause of the issue is unclear, but it appears to be related to the update of Claude Desktop. Without more information about the changes made in the latest version, it's difficult to provide a more specific solution.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Downgrade to a previous version of Claude Desktop that is known to work, if possible, as this may resolve the issue until a fix is available for the latest version.
