Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Desktop

What's Wrong?

Cowork crashes with "Claude Code process exited with code 1" on every prompt submission. Chat mode works fine. Only Cowork is affected.

Environment

  • macOS Tahoe 26.3
  • Claude Desktop (latest version)
  • Hardware: MacBook Air

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Claude Desktop
  2. Navigate to Cowork
  3. Type any prompt and submit
  4. Error appears: "Claude Code process exited with code 1"

Expected Behavior Cowork should respond to the prompt normally.

Actual Behavior Process crashes immediately with exit code 1. No response is returned.

Troubleshooting Already Attempted

  • Verified Claude is listed and enabled under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording
  • Ran tccutil reset All com.anthropic.claudefordesktop — returned success, re-granted permission, issue persists
  • Confirmed Claude Desktop is on the latest version

Additional Context This appears related to issues #33424 and #36419 (macOS Tahoe + Cowork crashes). Chat mode is fully functional — only Cowork is broken.

What Should Happen?

Expected Behavior Cowork should respond to the prompt normally.

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue can be potentially resolved by investigating the compatibility of Claude Desktop with macOS Tahoe 26.3, specifically focusing on the Cowork feature.

Guidance

  • Review the system logs for any additional error messages that may indicate the cause of the "Claude Code process exited with code 1" error.
  • Check if there are any known issues or updates related to macOS Tahoe 26.3 and Claude Desktop compatibility, especially concerning the Cowork feature.
  • Since Chat mode works fine, compare the system settings and permissions for both Chat and Cowork modes to identify any discrepancies.
  • Consider testing an earlier version of Claude Desktop to see if the issue is a regression, given the mention of similar issues in #33424 and #36419.

Example

No specific code snippet can be provided without more details on the internal workings of Claude Desktop or the Anthropic API.

Notes

The issue seems to be specific to the Cowork feature on macOS Tahoe 26.3 with the latest version of Claude Desktop. The fact that Chat mode works suggests the issue might be related to how Cowork interacts with the system or the Anthropic API.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Given the potential compatibility issues and the fact that this might be related to known problems (#33424 and #36419), trying a workaround such as adjusting system settings or waiting for an update that addresses macOS Tahoe 26.3 compatibility might be the best course of action.
