Error Message

Bug Report: Cowork causes boot failure (error 0xc0000001) on Dell G3 3579 after Virtual Machine Platform activation Every time Cowork attempts to enable Virtual Machine Platform — whether triggered automatically by Claude Desktop or manually via Windows Features — the laptop fails to boot on restart with error code 0xc0000001. System boots to Recovery screen with error 0xc0000001 ClaudeSetup.exe installed as Administrator → same error Direct MSIX package via PowerShell Add-AppxPackage as Administrator → same error Manual activation via "Turn Windows features on or off" → same error Performed in-place repair of Windows 11 using matching ISO (26200.8457 es-ES) → same error persists The error suggests Virtual Machine Platform activation corrupts critical boot files on this specific hardware configuration Every VMP activation attempt results in error 0xc0000001 on restart, requiring System Restore to recover.

Error Messages/Logs

Error code: 0xc0000001 The error appears immediately after restarting following Virtual Machine Platform activation. The system enters a recovery loop and cannot boot into Windows without performing a System Restore. 6 System restarts and shows the recovery screen with error 0xc0000001

Code Example

Error code: 0xc0000001
Screen message: "Your PC couldn't start properly. After multiple tries, the operating system on your PC failed to start, so it needs to be repaired."
Log file location: D:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt
The error appears immediately after restarting following Virtual Machine Platform activation. The system enters a recovery loop and cannot boot into Windows without performing a System Restore.
Additional log note: The SrtTrail.txt log references drive D:\ instead of C:, which suggests the boot configuration is pointing to the wrong partition after VMP activation corrupts the EFI boot entries.

What's Wrong?

Bug Report: Cowork causes boot failure (error 0xc0000001) on Dell G3 3579 after Virtual Machine Platform activation Device Information:

Laptop: Dell G3 3579 OS: Windows 11 Home version 25H2 (Build 26200.8457), Español (España) Architecture: x64 BIOS: Dell Inc. 1.25.0 Processor: Intel (x64) Virtualization: Intel VT-x ✅ Enabled, VT for Direct I/O ✅ Enabled (confirmed in BIOS)

Claude Desktop:

Tested with: ClaudeSetup.exe installer and direct MSIX package (claude.ai/api/desktop/win32/x64/msix/latest/redirect) Both installed as Administrator via PowerShell (Add-AppxPackage) Plan: Pro

Problem Description: Every time Cowork attempts to enable Virtual Machine Platform — whether triggered automatically by Claude Desktop or manually via Windows Features — the laptop fails to boot on restart with error code 0xc0000001. Steps to reproduce:

Install Claude Desktop (tested with .exe and MSIX) Open Cowork tab and click "Enable" (or manually enable Virtual Machine Platform from Windows Features) Restart when prompted System boots to Recovery screen with error 0xc0000001 Windows cannot start properly and requires System Restore to recover

What I tried:

ClaudeSetup.exe installed as Administrator → same error Direct MSIX package via PowerShell Add-AppxPackage as Administrator → same error Manual activation via "Turn Windows features on or off" → same error Verified Intel VT-x and VT for Direct I/O are both enabled in BIOS Verified Windows 11 Home Build 26200.8457 is fully updated Performed in-place repair of Windows 11 using matching ISO (26200.8457 es-ES) → same error persists

Recovery method: Each time this happens, System Restore to a previous restore point is required to recover the system. The laptop has crashed and been restored multiple times attempting to get Cowork working. Additional notes:

This appears related to issues #25136, #27316, #27420, #29887, and #32004 reported by other users The error suggests Virtual Machine Platform activation corrupts critical boot files on this specific hardware configuration Other virtualization software works normally on this machine Claude Desktop Chat mode works perfectly — only Cowork/VMP activation causes the issue

Expected behavior: Cowork should activate Virtual Machine Platform without corrupting the boot process. Actual behavior: Every VMP activation attempt results in error 0xc0000001 on restart, requiring System Restore to recover.

What Should Happen?

Cowork should successfully enable Virtual Machine Platform and restart the system without corrupting boot files, allowing the Cowork workspace to initialize normally after reboot.

Steps to Reproduce

1 Install Claude Desktop on Windows 11 Home Build 26200.8457 as Administrator (tested with both .exe installer and direct MSIX package) 2 Sign in with a Pro account 3 Open the Cowork tab in Claude Desktop 4 Click the "Enable" button when the "Virtual Machine Platform not available" message appears 5 Confirm the restart when prompted 6 System restarts and shows the recovery screen with error 0xc0000001 7 Windows cannot boot normally 8 It is necessary to enter the recovery environment and perform a System Restore to recover the machine

Note: The issue also occurs when enabling Virtual Machine Platform manually from "Turn Windows features on or off" without using Claude Desktop, with the same result.
