🐛 Describe the bug

Using vLLM on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (SM120 / compute capability 12.0) with GPT-OSS-20B, the model works with the default backend selection, but it does not take the expected optimized backend path.

Instead, on the default path, vLLM initializes successfully and selects:

  • TRITON_ATTN for attention
  • Marlin for the MXFP4 / MoE path

What I expect on this GPU is:

  • FlashInfer for attention
  • MXFP4_MXFP8_CUTLASS for the MoE path

When I explicitly force the attention backend to FLASHINFER, engine initialization fails immediately with:

ValueError: Selected backend AttentionBackendEnum.FLASHINFER is not valid for this configuration. Reason: ['sink setting not supported']

I also observed the same kind of rejection when trying FLASH_ATTN.

This looks like GPT-OSS on SM120 is currently falling back to TRITON_ATTN + Marlin instead of taking a FlashInfer attention path plus an MXFP4/MXFP8 CUTLASS MoE path.

To Reproduce

Minimal repro:

from vllm import LLM

llm = LLM(
    model="./gpt-oss-20b",
    tensor_parallel_size=1,
    max_num_seqs=1,
    max_model_len=8192,
    enable_chunked_prefill=True,
    enable_prefix_caching=False,
    # default path works, but uses TRITON_ATTN + Marlin
    # attention_backend="FLASHINFER",  # forcing this fails
)

Default backend behavior

With the default backend selection, vLLM initializes successfully but selects fallback backends:

INFO ... Using TRITON_ATTN attention backend out of potential backends: ['TRITON_ATTN'].
DEBUG ... MXFP4 attention layer is not implemented. Skipping quantization for this layer.
INFO ... Using Marlin backend
DEBUG ... Enabled separate cuda stream for MoE shared_experts

This suggests:

  • GPT-OSS attention is not using FlashInfer or FlashAttention on SM120
  • MXFP4 attention is not implemented for this path
  • MXFP4 / MoE execution is falling back to Marlin instead of an MXFP4/MXFP8 CUTLASS path

I also see the backend selector explicitly reject FlashAttention-family backends due to sinks:

Some attention backends are not valid for cuda with AttentionSelectorConfig(... has_sink=True ...).
Reasons: {FLASH_ATTN: [sink setting not supported], FLASHINFER: [sink setting not supported], FLEX_ATTENTION: [sink setting not supported]}.
Using TRITON_ATTN attention backend out of potential backends: ['TRITON_ATTN'].

Forced FlashInfer behavior

When I explicitly force the attention backend to FLASHINFER, initialization fails before inference starts:

File ".../vllm/v1/attention/selector.py", line 102, in _cached_get_attn_backend
  attention_cls = current_platform.get_attn_backend_cls(
File ".../vllm/platforms/cuda.py", line 363, in get_attn_backend_cls
  raise ValueError(
ValueError: Selected backend AttentionBackendEnum.FLASHINFER is not valid for this configuration. Reason: ['sink setting not supported']

Full traceback starts from LLM(...) initialization.

Expected behavior

One of the following:

  • GPT-OSS on SM120 uses FlashInfer for attention and MXFP4/MXFP8 CUTLASS for the MoE path
  • or vLLM clearly documents that GPT-OSS sink attention and the MXFP4/MXFP8 CUTLASS MoE path are unsupported on SM120

Actual behavior

  • Default path: initializes and runs, but uses TRITON_ATTN + Marlin
  • FlashInfer attention is not selected
  • MXFP4/MXFP8 CUTLASS MoE path is not selected
  • Forced FLASHINFER: initialization fails with sink setting not supported

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue is likely due to the FLASHINFER attention backend not being supported on the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (SM120) GPU, causing vLLM to fall back to TRITON_ATTN and Marlin backends.

Guidance

  • The error message ValueError: Selected backend AttentionBackendEnum.FLASHINFER is not valid for this configuration. Reason: ['sink setting not supported'] suggests that the FLASHINFER backend is not compatible with the current GPU configuration.
  • The default backend selection uses TRITON_ATTN and Marlin, which may not be the optimal choice for the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU.
  • To resolve the issue, you may need to wait for an update to the vLLM library that adds support for the FLASHINFER backend on the SM120 GPU or use a different GPU that is supported.
  • Alternatively, you can try to use a different attention backend, such as TRITON_ATTN, and see if it provides acceptable performance.

Example

No code example is provided as the issue is related to the compatibility of the FLASHINFER backend with the SM120 GPU.

Notes

  • The issue is specific to the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (SM120) GPU and may not be reproducible on other GPUs.
  • The vLLM library may need to be updated to add support for the FLASHINFER backend on the SM120 GPU.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: use the default backend selection (TRITON_ATTN and Marlin) until the FLASHINFER backend is supported on the SM120 GPU.
