Kimi 2.6 with The Kimi K2 tool parser (vllm/tool_parsers/kimi_k2_tool_parser.py) extracts tool-call arguments via regex from between <|tool_call_argument_begin|> and <|tool_call_end|> markers, then emits the raw extracted string as FunctionCall.arguments without ever calling json.loads to validate the JSON.

When the model generates structurally-malformed JSON — most commonly during long-content tool calls — broken arguments are passed straight through to the client. The OpenAI-compatible response is "successful" (HTTP 200) but tool_call.arguments fails any downstream JSON parser.

This is a different concern from #37184 (buffer limits / delta diffing / token leakage). Even after that PR lands, the parser will continue to emit invalid JSON to clients without any signal that it did so.

Example: tool_call.arguments = '{"input": "{"key": "value"...}"' ← outer } missing

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue can be fixed by modifying the Kimi K2 tool parser to validate the extracted JSON string using json.loads before emitting it as FunctionCall.arguments.

Guidance

  • Identify the kimi_k2_tool_parser.py file and locate the function responsible for extracting tool-call arguments.
  • Modify the function to use json.loads to validate the extracted JSON string.
  • If the validation fails, handle the error and provide a meaningful error message or fallback behavior.
  • Consider adding additional logging or metrics to track instances of malformed JSON being generated by the model.

Example

import json

# ...

def extract_tool_call_arguments(text):
    # Extract the argument string using regex
    argument_string = extract_argument_string(text)

    try:
        # Validate the JSON string using json.loads
        arguments = json.loads(argument_string)
        return arguments
    except json.JSONDecodeError as e:
        # Handle the error and provide a meaningful error message
        logging.error(f"Invalid JSON: {argument_string}")
        return None

Notes

  • This fix assumes that the kimi_k2_tool_parser.py file is modifiable and that the json library is available.
  • Additional error handling and logging may be necessary depending on the specific requirements of the application.

Recommendation

Apply the workaround by modifying the kimi_k2_tool_parser.py file to validate the extracted JSON string using json.loads. This will prevent malformed JSON from being emitted as FunctionCall.arguments and provide a more robust parsing mechanism.
