What happened?

The CLI hangs indefinitely at the Thinking... stage when automatic model selection is enabled.

This is a long-standing issue that has been consistently observed since the v0.3.x versions and persists in the current v0.4.2 release. In a recent instance, the CLI remained in the "Thinking" state for over 33 minutes without any response or timeout.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.Use gemini-cli (v0.3.x through v0.4.2).

2.Ensure the configuration is set to "automatic model selection".

3.Run a prompt.

4.The process hangs at Thinking....

The CLI should select a model and provide a response within a reasonable timeframe. If selection fails, it should throw a clear error or timeout instead of hanging indefinitely.
