Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

The Claude Desktop app no longer provides a dedicated Claude Code developer UI.

Only Claude Cowork is available as the agentic desktop interface, and it does not support developer workflows with the same usability, interaction model, or ergonomics that the previous Claude Code desktop experience offered.

As a result, Claude Code is effectively CLI-only, despite previously having a significantly more user-friendly desktop UI for coding tasks.

Why this is a regression The prior Claude Code desktop UI was significantly more efficient for:

  • structured coding tasks
  • longer interactive sessions
  • iterative development workflows

Cowork is optimized for non‑coding, document- and file‑oriented tasks and lacks parity for developer use cases. Removing a usable Claude Code desktop experience materially degrades usability, even though the underlying agent capabilities still exist via CLI.

This represents a usability regression, not just a product repositioning.

What Should Happen?

Claude Code should have a first‑class desktop UI suitable for development workflows, or a clearly defined developer mode within the desktop app that restores the prior Claude Code experience. Cowork should not be treated as an equivalent replacement for developer-focused usage.

Error Messages/Logs

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install or update to the latest Claude Desktop app
  2. Open the app
  3. Observe that agentic functionality is limited to Cowork
  4. Attempt to access a developer-focused Claude Code desktop interface (not available)

Observed behavior

  • No Claude Code desktop UI option exists
  • Cowork is presented as the only agentic desktop experience

Expected behavior

  • Claude Code remains available as a first-class desktop experience
  • or a developer-specific mode exists in the desktop app

extent analysis

TL;DR

The Claude Code desktop UI is no longer available, and the suggested fix is to restore the previous Claude Code desktop experience or create a developer mode within the Cowork interface.

Guidance

  • Verify that the issue is not specific to the Windows platform by testing on other operating systems to determine if the problem is platform-agnostic.
  • Check the release notes for version 2.1.109 to see if the removal of the Claude Code desktop UI was an intentional change or a regression.
  • Consider reaching out to the development team to request the restoration of the Claude Code desktop UI or the creation of a developer mode within Cowork.
  • Test the CLI version of Claude Code to ensure that the underlying agent capabilities are still functional.

Example

No code snippet is provided as the issue is related to the absence of a desktop UI rather than a code-specific problem.

Notes

The issue seems to be a regression, and the last working version is not specified. The fix may involve restoring a previous version of the desktop app or creating a new developer mode.

Recommendation

Apply a workaround by using the CLI version of Claude Code until the desktop UI is restored or a developer mode is created, as the underlying agent capabilities are still available via the command line.
