A frontend-legal same-request streaming continuation can make vLLM rebuild a renewed prompt whose final token length exceeds the worker input-batch width. The initial request is within bounds. The overflow appears only after vLLM folds already-generated output back into the resumable request and then accepts the next streaming update. On the verified Qwen3 GPTQ run, this ends at gpu_input_batch.add_request() with a stable host-side broadcast failure.

Error Message

worker-side width. The observed surface is the Numpy broadcast error raised

  • error.txt on failure

Root Cause

This is a renewed-prompt width bug, not a simple “initial prompt too long” rejection.

The important distinction is:

  • the first late-session submit is accepted
  • the overflow appears only after vLLM legally continues the same resumable request and rebuilds its prompt state

That means the bug lives in the resumed streaming-session bookkeeping path, not in basic prompt admission.

PR fix notes

PR #42502: [v1] Guard resumable streaming updates against max_model_len overflow

Description (problem / solution / changelog)

Fixes #42489

When a resumable request receives a streaming_update, the scheduler rebuilds the prompt by folding in already-computed output tokens plus the new chunk. That renewed prompt can exceed max_model_len even though the original request was fine, and when it did, gpu_input_batch.add_request() would crash with an opaque NumPy broadcast error:

ValueError: could not broadcast input array from shape (279,) into shape (256,)

The fix adds a length check at the start of _update_request_as_session() before any state is mutated. If renewed_prompt_len >= max_model_len, the method returns early and the caller finishes the request with FINISHED_LENGTH_CAPPED (same as any other length-exceeded request). Both call sites are covered: _handle_stopped_request() and add_request(). A defensive bounds check is also added in GPUInputBatch.add_request() so any future regression produces a clear error instead of a NumPy traceback.

Testing: 4 CPU-only scheduler unit tests covering the overflow path, exact boundary, and both call sites. No model or GPU required.

🐛 Describe the bug

Summary

A frontend-legal same-request streaming continuation can make vLLM rebuild a renewed prompt whose final token length exceeds the worker input-batch width. The initial request is within bounds. The overflow appears only after vLLM folds already-generated output back into the resumable request and then accepts the next streaming update. On the verified Qwen3 GPTQ run, this ends at gpu_input_batch.add_request() with a stable host-side broadcast failure.

Impact

  • A legal resumable request sequence can kill a request path without requiring malformed token ids or direct internal-state access
  • The failure happens after the request has already been accepted, so it is not just an admission-time prompt-length rejection
  • In practice this is a reliable request-triggered engine failure surface for the affected workload shape

Affected version

  • Confirmed on vLLM 0.17.1
  • Earlier and later versions have not been checked yet in this report

Repro model

repro_g6_prompt_overflow_local.py

Reproduce script

  • repro_g6_prompt_overflow_local.py is the standalone local reproducer

Trigger chain

  1. A request is submitted as a resumable short chunk.
  2. While peer requests are still active, the same request receives a legal streaming_update.
  3. vLLM treats the request as a resumed session and rebuilds its live prompt from the original prompt, the already-produced output, and the new update.
  4. That renewed prompt becomes longer than the fixed worker-side input width reserved for the batch.
  5. gpu_input_batch.add_request() tries to write the renewed prompt into the existing row and raises a host-side shape mismatch.

Details

Trigger path in code

  1. The request is marked resumable, so vLLM keeps enough state to accept later streaming updates on the same live request.
  2. When the update arrives, vLLM does not treat it as a brand-new unrelated request. It appends the new prompt fragment onto the active resumable request state.
  3. In the output-processor path, streaming updates extend the stored prompt_token_ids for that live request.
    # vllm/v1/engine/output_processor.py
def apply_streaming_update(self, update: StreamingUpdate) -> None:
        if self.prompt_token_ids:
            self.prompt_token_ids.extend(update.prompt_token_ids or ())
        else:
            self.prompt_token_ids = update.prompt_token_ids or []
        self.prompt_len = len(self.prompt_token_ids)
  4. Later, when the renewed request is materialized into the worker input batch, gpu_input_batch.add_request() copies the full prompt row into a fixed-width CPU/Numpy buffer.
    # vllm/v1/worker/gpu_input_batch.py
    num_prompt_tokens = length_from_prompt_token_ids_or_embeds(
        request.prompt_token_ids, request.prompt_embeds
    )
    self.token_ids_cpu[req_index, :num_prompt_tokens] = request.prompt_token_ids
  5. In this PoC, the original short chunk is accepted successfully. The failure only appears after the later update causes the rebuilt prompt to exceed the worker-side width. The observed surface is the Numpy broadcast error raised during that assignment.

Local script breakdown

repro_g6_prompt_overflow_local.py is a standalone local reproducer.

  • It reads the Qwen3 checkpoint path from VLLM_POC_G6_MODEL or the built-in /path/to/qwen3 placeholder
  • It creates one EngineCore directly
  • It submits:
    • one speculative anchor request
    • one overlapping peer request
    • one resumable late request with two legal chunks
  • The late request is first submitted as a short resumable chunk and then extended through a same-request streaming_update
  • It writes:
    • campaign.json
    • repro_config.json
    • request_history.json
    • request_states.json
    • action_log.json
    • error.txt on failure

Observed result

Typical local failure:

  • ValueError: could not broadcast input array from shape (...) into shape (...)

On the verified historical corridor, the representative surface is:

  • ValueError: could not broadcast input array from shape (279,) into shape (256,)
