PR fix notes

PR #39484: fix(tool_parsers): fix Gemma4 STRING_DELIM leaking into array string …

Description (problem / solution / changelog)

Purpose

Fix STRING_DELIM (<|"|>) leaking into JSON output when parsing array string values in _parse_gemma4_args and _parse_gemma4_array in the Gemma4 tool call parser.

Fixes #39468

When a tool call contains an array of string values (e.g. file paths), the output JSON contained raw <|" delimiter fragments instead of clean string values:

Before:

{
    "pdfs": ["<|"|"/home/h/a.pdf<|"|>", "<|"|"/home/h/b.pdf<|"|>"],
    "prompt": "analyse these 2 pdfs."
}

After:

{
    "pdfs": ["/home/h/a.pdf", "/home/h/b.pdf"],
    "prompt": "analyse these 2 pdfs."
}

Test Plan

python -m pytest tests/tool_parsers/test_gemma4_tool_parser.py -v

Test Result

Added regression test test_parse_gemma4_args_pdf_array that reproduces the exact bug. All 46 tests pass:

Changed files

  • tests/tool_parsers/test_gemma4_tool_parser.py (modified, +17/-0)
  • vllm/tool_parsers/gemma4_tool_parser.py (modified, +21/-6)

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue is likely due to the JSON string being surrounded by specific characters <|" which may be causing parsing errors, and a workaround could be to remove or properly handle these characters.

Guidance

  • Verify that the JSON string is correctly formatted and does not contain any unnecessary characters.
  • Check the documentation for the vllm serve command to see if there are any options for handling special characters in the input JSON.
  • Consider modifying the input JSON to remove the <|" characters, or use a JSON parser that can handle these characters correctly.
  • Test the command with a simplified JSON input to see if the issue persists.

Example

No code example is provided as the issue is likely related to the specific input JSON and the vllm serve command.

Notes

The issue may be specific to the vllm serve command and the input JSON, and further investigation may be needed to determine the root cause.

Recommendation

Apply a workaround to remove or properly handle the <|" characters in the input JSON, as the issue is likely related to these characters.
