Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

In Claude CLI if you are asked for permission to edit a file or something, often times the choices are:

  1. Yes
  2. Yes and don't ask again for xyz
  3. No

But other times in the same operation, it will present:

  1. Yes
  2. No

What Should Happen?

This is confusing, and makes me spend more time making sure I don't tap the wrong number. I think it would be an improvement to change it to:

1 Yes
2 Yes always
0 No

and

1 Yes
0 No

It doesn't have to be 0 necessarily, I just think whatever the options are, they should stay consistent with their category.

Error Messages/Logs

No errors, just a UI inconsistency that causes extra focus

Steps to Reproduce

  • Do something that requires a lot of thinking and writing a lot of files
  • You'll be presented with a bunch of questions for permission
  • Sometimes they are 1) yes 2) yes always 3) no, and sometimes they are 1) yes and 2) no

extent analysis

TL;DR

Consolidate the permission prompt options to a consistent format, such as "1 Yes", "2 Yes always", and "0 No", to reduce user confusion.

Guidance

  • Review the code responsible for generating permission prompts to identify the inconsistency in option presentation.
  • Consider introducing a standardized format for all permission prompts, ensuring that the options are consistent across similar operations.
  • Verify that the proposed change does not introduce any unintended behavior or conflicts with existing functionality.
  • Test the updated permission prompts with various operations to ensure consistency and user experience improvement.

Example

No code snippet is provided as the issue does not contain sufficient technical details to create a specific example.

Notes

The solution may require modifications to the Claude CLI codebase, and it is essential to ensure that the changes do not introduce any regressions or compatibility issues.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Introduce a consistent format for permission prompts to improve user experience, as the current inconsistency may cause confusion and extra focus for users.
