Fix / Workaround

Impact: Project organization is not usable as a durable project inbox. Chats created for a project must be found manually under global Chats, defeating the purpose of project-scoped chat organization. Suggested next steps Submit that through Codex/OpenAI feedback. Locally, I’d stop editing sidebar state now. The state has the expected associations, so further patching risks churn without fixing the actual rendering behavior.

What issue are you seeing?

Issue: When I create or use a chat from inside the AI Tooling Lab project, the chat appears only under global Chats and does not appear nested/listed under the AI Tooling Lab project in the sidebar.

Expected: Chats created from or associated with a project should remain visible under that project in the sidebar.

Actual: The chat remains visible under global Chats only. Renaming the chat does not help. Restarting Codex Desktop does not help.

Troubleshooting already tried:

  • Renamed the chat.
  • Restarted Codex Desktop.
  • Rebooted Windows.
  • Verified the thread database has the correct cwd for the chat: \?\C:\Users\Marne\Documents\Codex\2026-05-12\ai-tooling-lab
  • Verified the project is saved, pinned, and labeled in local Codex state.
  • Added/verified local sidebar state keys:
    • thread-workspace-root-hints
    • thread-project-assignments
    • sidebar-project-thread-orders
  • Even with those mappings present, Codex Desktop still does not render the chat under the AI Tooling Lab project.

Example thread ID: 019e4bb4-d578-7152-aa14-067636ef457b
