PR #22652 added the initial codex-cli external-process provider as a text-in/text-out MVP. This issue tracks follow-up work to bring it to production parity.

Tasks

1. Session continuity

Drop --ephemeral, persist sessions, use codex exec resume --last on subsequent turns.

2. Setup wizard integration

Add codex-cli to the interactive provider picker in hermes setup (models/copilot-acp setup flow).

3. Gateway support

Verify and tune for gateway platforms (Telegram, Discord, Slack). Already uses --skip-git-repo-check.

4. Tool support (long-term)

Parse Codex JSONL for tool call events. Potentially intercept and delegate certain tool calls to Hermes.

5. Auxiliary model support

Add a cheap model for auxiliary client usage.

6. Docs

Update environment-variables.md, providers.md, cli-commands.md.
