Problem Statement

When using MCP servers , every tool call displays the full request parameters and response JSON in the output. For plugins that make many API calls, this creates significant visual noise — the user only cares about the result, not the raw payloads.

Use Case Example

Building a Claude Code plugin for POC project using an MCP server for all backend calls. The plugin has careful UX rules but raw tool call display undermines the clean experience.

extent analysis

TL;DR

Add a toolOutputLevel setting to control the level of detail displayed for tool calls, allowing for customization of the output to reduce visual noise.

Guidance

  • Introduce a toolOutputLevel setting with options for full, compact, name-only, and hidden to give users control over the level of detail displayed for tool calls.
  • Allow the toolOutputLevel setting to be configured globally or per-tool pattern to provide flexibility in managing output.
  • Consider implementing the toolOutputLevel setting as a configurable option in the CLI or VSCode extension to make it easily accessible to users.
  • Test the toolOutputLevel setting with different tool calls and output levels to ensure it functions as expected and reduces visual noise.

Example

{
  "toolOutputLevel": {
    "default": "full",
    "mcp__ai_project_poc__*": "name-only",
    "Bash": "compact"
  }
}

This example shows how the toolOutputLevel setting can be configured to display only the tool name for MCP server tool calls, while displaying compact output for Bash tool calls.

Notes

The implementation of the toolOutputLevel setting will depend on the specific requirements and constraints of the Claude Code plugin and MCP server. Additional testing and validation may be necessary to ensure the setting works correctly in different scenarios.

Recommendation

Apply the proposed solution by adding the toolOutputLevel setting to provide users with control over the level of detail displayed for tool calls, reducing visual noise and improving the overall user experience.
