Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing requests and this feature hasn't been requested yet
  • This is a single feature request (not multiple features)

Problem Statement

The Chat / Cowork / Code tabs are not always visible in the desktop app. Switching between modes requires extra navigation steps, which interrupts workflow — especially when moving frequently between Chat and Code or Cowork.

Proposed Solution

Keep the Chat / Cowork / Code tab bar persistently visible at the top of the app, regardless of the current mode or screen state. One click should always be enough to switch modes from anywhere in the app. Why it matters Quick mode-switching is a core part of daily usage. Having to hunt for the tab bar adds unnecessary friction. A persistent tab bar would make the app feel significantly more responsive and efficient.

extent analysis

TL;DR

Implementing a persistent tab bar at the top of the app to keep Chat, Cowork, and Code tabs always visible and accessible can improve workflow efficiency.

Guidance

  • Review the app's UI layout and navigation design to identify potential areas for improvement in making the tab bar persistently visible.
  • Consider the trade-offs between screen real estate and the benefits of having the tab bar always visible, especially on smaller screens.
  • Investigate existing UI components or libraries that could be leveraged to create a responsive and adaptive tab bar that works well across different modes and screen states.
  • Evaluate the impact of a persistent tab bar on the app's overall user experience and productivity, considering factors like information density and visual clutter.

Example

No specific code example can be provided without more context on the app's technology stack and implementation details.

Notes

The feasibility of implementing a persistent tab bar may depend on the app's technical architecture, the technologies used for the UI, and potential limitations in screen space, especially on smaller devices.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Implement a design change to make the tab bar persistently visible, as this directly addresses the reported issue of interrupted workflow due to extra navigation steps.
