Problem

Two Hermes agents on different machines need to communicate. Currently this requires:

  • Custom cron jobs polling SSH-shared directories
  • Manual scp for file transfer
  • Shell scripts for mailbox detection

This is fragile (cron delivery fails silently) and requires SSH key setup.

Proposed

A mailbox toolset:

  • check_mail(peer) — poll peer's mailbox, return new messages
  • send_mail(peer, msg) — deliver a message to peer

Uses existing SSH config. No cron, no watchdog scripts. Same concept as the existing send_message tool but agent-to-agent
