After upgrading OpenClaw, Google Chat inbound messages stopped working. Outbound sending still works, but messages sent from users to the bot no longer make it through normal handling. On the Google side, the webhook request is returning HTTP 401 Unauthorized.

This integration was working before the upgrade. No intentional changes were made on the Google Chat or Google Cloud side. The failure started only after OpenClaw was updated.

A few things have already been verified:

  • outbound sending to Google Chat still succeeds
  • inbound requests do reach the webhook path
  • Google Chat reports that the app did not respond, or that the response was invalid
  • Google-side logs show HTTP 401 Unauthorized

I also tested the newer Google Chat auth path introduced in recent OpenClaw versions, including the new appPrincipal setting. Even after that, inbound requests were still rejected with 401.

At this point this looks more like a regression in the Google Chat inbound webhook auth path than a full integration failure, since outbound delivery still works.

extent analysis

TL;DR

The most likely fix involves reconfiguring the authentication settings for the Google Chat inbound webhook in OpenClaw, potentially related to the appPrincipal setting or another aspect of the updated auth path.

Guidance

  • Review the authentication configuration for the Google Chat inbound webhook to ensure it aligns with the updated requirements in the new OpenClaw version.
  • Verify that the appPrincipal setting is correctly configured, as this is a new requirement and might be the cause of the 401 Unauthorized errors.
  • Check the OpenClaw documentation for any specific guidance on migrating Google Chat integrations to the new version, focusing on authentication and webhook handling changes.
  • Test the inbound webhook with a minimal, manually crafted request to isolate if the issue is with the Google Chat integration or a more general problem with OpenClaw's webhook authentication.

Example

No specific code example can be provided without more details on the OpenClaw configuration and API, but ensuring that authentication headers or parameters are correctly set according to the new OpenClaw version's requirements is crucial.

Notes

The solution may depend on the specifics of the OpenClaw version update and how Google Chat integration authentication has changed. Without access to the updated documentation or the exact configuration, these steps are speculative but aimed at the most likely cause based on the information provided.

Recommendation

Apply a workaround by downgrading OpenClaw to the previous version where the Google Chat integration was working, until a more permanent fix can be found and applied, as this regression seems to be related to changes in the new version.
