What variant of Codex are you using?

Codex Desktop Application

What feature would you like to see?

I think it would be really valuable if Codex could take some inspiration from Claude Desktop when it comes to transparency around context management and limits.

Claude Desktop provides very clear visibility into how the context window is being used, including breakdowns like messages, tools, system prompt, and remaining space. This makes it much easier to understand behavior, debug issues, and work efficiently.

In Codex, this kind of visibility is basically missing, and it makes it harder to reason about what’s happening under the hood.

I’m not sure if this is planned, but I genuinely hope something like this or even better! gets added. Having clear insight into context usage and limits would be a big improvement for users.

extent analysis

TL;DR

The user suggests adding a feature to Codex to provide transparency around context management and limits, similar to Claude Desktop, to improve user experience and debugging.

Guidance

  • Review the existing context management system in Codex to identify potential areas for improvement and determine the feasibility of adding a transparency feature.
  • Research how Claude Desktop implements its context management transparency feature to gather inspiration and ideas for potential implementation in Codex.
  • Consider adding a feature request to the Codex roadmap to prioritize the development of a context management transparency feature.
  • Evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of implementing such a feature, including its impact on user experience, performance, and debugging capabilities.

Notes

The implementation of this feature may require significant changes to the Codex architecture and user interface, and may have performance implications that need to be carefully considered.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Collect user feedback and prioritize the development of a context management transparency feature to improve user experience and debugging capabilities, as it is not currently available in Codex.
