The same regex was rejected by ugrep (separate Bash invocation) with error: exceeds complexity limits; the Claude internal matcher had no equivalent guard.

Summary
The native ARM64 CLI binary (2.1.152) entered a runaway state — 8.2 GB physical RSS, single main thread at 100% CPU — when its in-process matcher processed a regex with bounded repetition over a UTF-8 byte-class alternation against a long single-line minified JS input. The same regex was rejected by ugrep (separate Bash invocation) with error: exceeds complexity limits; the Claude internal matcher had no equivalent guard.

Reproduction context
Reverse-engineering a minified, obfuscated JS bundle (~318 KB on disk, but a large fraction is a single long line — thousands of comma-separated minified identifiers + a base64 blob from a fraud-detection SDK). A grep with the following pattern was issued from within the session:

exceeds complexity limitsBut the same pattern reached Claude's own in-process matcher (likely via Grep-result rendering / highlight on tool output, which contained the failing pattern verbatim). After that, the binary went to ~8 GB RSS within seconds, all on the main thread.
Sample dump signature
sample against the runaway PID shows the classic catastrophic-backtracking profile:

0x224a00..0x224e00— ~1000 of 2243 samples concentrated there. - Heavy
operator new/_free/_xzm_xzone_mallocchurn. - Physical footprint 8.2 GB; virtual 416 GB (latter is normal address-space reservation, not the symptom).
Deep recursion + per-step allocation explosion on a single thread is exactly what a backtracking regex engine does on an adversarial input.
Killing was non-trivial
After kill -9 <pid>, "new" runaway processes kept appearing. Cause is not a Claude supervisor — several parallel claude sessions on the same workspace independently entered the same state. Noted so anyone reproducing doesn't get confused.
Expected behavior
One or more of:
- A regex-runtime / backtracking-depth guard analogous to
ugrep's complexity-limit refusal, returning an error instead of consuming unbounded memory. - A soft RSS cap with graceful abort + diagnostic message.
- At minimum, a hard upper bound on per-match allocation that triggers a controlled crash with a hint, not silent multi-GB growth.
