Error Message

I recently upgraded to a Pro plan by joining a Google Family group. While Gemini Pro on web works perfectly, I’m having trouble with gemini-cli. Despite reinstalling, clearing the cache, and re-logging several times, it fails to respond to a simple "hi" prompt. It either hangs indefinitely on "thinking" or returns an error regarding high demand.

I have this same issue on windows and wsl and with any model (even gemini-2.5-flash)

What did you expect to happen?

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue with gemini-cli failing to respond to prompts after upgrading to a Pro plan may be related to authentication or server overload, and checking the authentication method or trying a different model could help.

Guidance

  • Verify that the Google authentication is correctly configured and try re-authenticating using the web auth method.
  • Try switching to a different model, such as gemini-2.5-flash, to see if the issue persists.
  • Check if the problem occurs when using the Gemini Pro on the web, as it is mentioned to be working perfectly.
  • Consider reaching out to the support team for further assistance, as the issue may be related to the Pro plan or server-side configuration.

Notes

The issue seems to be specific to the gemini-cli and not related to the operating system, as it occurs on both Windows and WSL.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Try switching to a different model or re-authenticating using the web auth method, as this may help resolve the issue temporarily until a more permanent fix is found.
