Problem Statement

When using Claude Code in Japanese, session titles in the history panel are always generated in English — even when the entire conversation is in Japanese.

Example:

  • User message: 「このパソコンのFinder内のダウンロードの場所にあるファイルやフォルダを種類ごとに分けて整理して」
  • Generated title: "Organize Downloads folder by file type"

The date group labels (本日 / 昨日 / 古い順) already respect the system locale, but the title generation does not. This inconsistency is confusing for non-English speakers.

Claude.ai generates session titles in the conversation language — Claude Code should do the same.

Proposed Solution

Update the session title generation prompt to detect the language of the conversation and produce the title in that language, rather than always defaulting to English.

extent analysis

TL;DR

Update the session title generation prompt to detect the conversation language and produce titles in that language.

Guidance

  • Review the current session title generation logic to identify where the language is hardcoded to English.
  • Investigate using a language detection library or API to determine the conversation language.
  • Update the title generation prompt to use the detected language for title creation.
  • Test the updated title generation with conversations in multiple languages to ensure consistency.

Example

No specific code example can be provided without knowing the implementation details, but the solution might involve using a library like langdetect to detect the conversation language and then using that language to generate the title.

Notes

The exact implementation details will depend on the current architecture and technologies used by Claude Code. This solution assumes that integrating a language detection library or API is feasible and that the title generation logic can be updated to use the detected language.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Update the session title generation prompt to detect the conversation language, as this directly addresses the inconsistency and confusion caused by English titles in non-English conversations.
