What happened?

Gemini CLI deletes old session files automatically on startup. I never explicitly enabled this, but the schema defaults make cleanup active. The parent sessionRetention object defaults to undefined, but nested defaults are still expanded by getDefaultsFromSchema(). That means enabled: true and maxAge: "30d" become part of the merged settings. Once cleanup runs, sessions older than 30 days can be deleted with no normal UI message. The only feedback is debug logging, which most users never see.
