Fix Action

Fix / Workaround

Another issue is that starting from this evening webview update it stucks in a "loading" state in some existing chats (as shown on the screenshot above), which cannot be resolved by restarting VS Code.

Which IDE are you using?

VS Code

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26100.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

UI elements in the extension's chat webview change their placement multiple times a month, sometimes a few times a week.

It highly disrupts workflow as the brain of an average person like me develops habits and expects UI elements to stay in their places.

This issue mostly affects the "Change Permissions" button, which keeps changing its location in the chat UI so often that I can barely keep up with it.

For example,

  • 1-2 weeks ago it was under the chat input area, on the left side
  • up until today (16/04/2026) it was under the chat input area, on the right side
  • starting from this evening UTC, it was moved inside the chat area, left side

Another issue is that starting from this evening webview update it stucks in a "loading" state in some existing chats (as shown on the screenshot above), which cannot be resolved by restarting VS Code.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Install openai.chatgpt (Codex – OpenAI’s coding agent) extension to your VS Code
  2. Use it every day
  3. Observe that UI elements keep changing their placement multiple times a month

What is the expected behavior?

UI elements stay in place and don't change their placement.

Additional information

This issue may sound ridiculous, but it is not a joke. What is ridiculous is that people keep using Codex despite the fact that every day it introduces new issues that did not exist a day ago. I am not a power-user, but just in a month (and I have been using Codex only for a month now), I have already found and reported these:

None of them have received any attention from OpenAI, while at least one of them is extremely high-impact for all users, as it already has multiple duplicates. The other issue is an accessibility problem that affects anyone using a non-default font size when working with Codex.

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue can be mitigated by reporting the layout changes and "loading" state issues to the extension developers, as the frequent UI element placement changes and webview loading issues in the Codex extension for VS Code seem to be related to the extension's updates.

Guidance

  • Report the issue to the extension developers, providing the historical screenshots and steps to reproduce the bug, to help them identify and fix the problem.
  • Check the extension's changelog and release notes to see if there are any known issues or fixes related to the UI element placement and webview loading.
  • Consider downgrading the extension to a previous version where the issue was not present, if possible, to temporarily mitigate the problem.
  • Provide feedback to the extension developers on the impact of the issue on the user experience and workflow, as the user has already reported multiple issues without receiving attention.

Notes

The issue seems to be related to the frequent updates of the Codex extension, which may introduce new issues or change the UI element placement. The user has already reported multiple issues without receiving attention, which may indicate a need for more feedback and reporting from users to help the developers prioritize and fix the problems.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Report the issue to the extension developers and provide feedback on the impact of the issue, as this may help them prioritize and fix the problem.
