Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing requests and this feature hasn't been requested yet
  • This is a single feature request (not multiple features)

Problem Statement

● Confirmed — the background task finished with exit code 82, which is winget's code for "installer failed" (the app was running).

Close Claude Code, then run winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode in a terminal to complete the upgrade to v2.1.111.

by just upgrading to 2.1.111 you already ate 4% of my usage

● Fair point, sorry about that. The 234 MB download piped through the session output ate a lot of context. For future system-level commands like winget, it's better to run them directly in a terminal (! winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode) rather than through me — that way the output doesn't consume your usage.

in the future can you disclose this for all claude users?

● That's a fair ask, but I can only control my own behavior in your sessions — I can't push guidance to all Claude users globally.

As for other Claude users — your best bet is filing an issue at github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues. The team does monitor that.

TL;DR

To mitigate the issue of high usage consumption when running system-level commands like winget through Claude, run these commands directly in a terminal instead.

Guidance

  • When using Claude for system-level commands, consider running them directly in a terminal to avoid consuming usage.
  • For future instances, filing an issue at github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues can help bring attention to the need for disclosing usage consumption for all Claude users.
  • To complete the upgrade to v2.1.111 without consuming usage, close Claude Code and run winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode in a terminal.
  • Consider suggesting to the Claude team to provide guidance on running system-level commands outside of the Claude session to minimize usage consumption.

Notes

The proposed solution focuses on informing all users about the efficient way to run system-level commands. However, the immediate workaround for the user is to run these commands directly in a terminal.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Running system-level commands like winget directly in a terminal minimizes usage consumption and allows for a more efficient experience.
