Root Cause

Because of that, when a new Codex App version is released, it is hard to know whether:

What version of the Codex App are you using (From "About Codex" dialog)?

latest available from the web download / installer at the time of filing

What platform is your computer?

What issue are you seeing?

It is unclear whether the Codex desktop app on Windows 11 supports reliable automatic updates.

I installed Codex from the web installer/download path, not from the Microsoft Store. From the app itself there does not appear to be a clear way to tell:

  • whether automatic updates are supported for this install channel
  • whether the app is currently up to date
  • whether the app has already checked for updates
  • whether there is a manual Check for updates action if auto-update is delayed or disabled

Because of that, when a new Codex App version is released, it is hard to know whether:

  1. the web-installed app is expected to auto-update silently
  2. Codex App has its own updater for this install channel
  3. the current install is stuck on an older version
  4. I need to manually re-download / reinstall from the website

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Install the Codex App on Windows 11 from the web download / installer.
  2. Open Codex App.
  3. Look for any visible in-app update status, current-vs-latest version info, or a Check for updates action.
  4. Observe that it is not clear whether auto-update exists or is working for this install path.

What is the expected behavior?

Codex App should make update behavior explicit on Windows for web-installed builds.

For example, one or more of the following would help:

  • clearly document whether the web-installed app supports automatic updates
  • show whether the current app version is up to date
  • provide a Check for updates action in the app
  • show a banner or notice when a newer version exists but has not been installed yet
  • explain whether the Microsoft Store and web-installed versions behave differently for updates

Additional information

This is primarily a Windows 11 UX / supportability issue.

I also noticed mojibake / corrupted quote characters while following up on this report, so there may be a separate Windows encoding issue somewhere in the app or reporting path as well.

If update behavior differs by install channel, the app or docs should say that clearly so users do not have to guess whether they are on the latest version.

extent analysis

TL;DR

The Codex App on Windows 11 should provide clear indications of its update behavior for web-installed versions, such as showing whether the current version is up to date or offering a "Check for updates" action.

Guidance

  • Check the Codex App documentation or support pages for any information on update behavior for web-installed versions on Windows 11.
  • Look for any subtle indicators within the app that might suggest its update status, such as a small icon or a link to a changelog.
  • Consider reaching out to Codex App support directly to inquire about the expected update behavior for web-installed versions on Windows 11.
  • If update behavior differs by install channel (e.g., Microsoft Store vs. web download), the app or its documentation should clearly state this to avoid user confusion.

Notes

The issue seems to be more about the lack of clear communication regarding update behavior rather than a technical fault with the update mechanism itself. The presence of mojibake/corrupted quote characters suggests there might be a separate issue related to character encoding.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Until clear guidance is provided by the Codex App team, users may need to periodically check the official website for updates and manually reinstall the app to ensure they are running the latest version.
