Summary

The usage indicator for the 1h/5h windows already exists in the Codex VS Code extension, but in the Work locally experience it appears inconsistently.

Problem

When using Codex Work locally in VS Code, the usage indicator is sometimes visible and sometimes missing. I am not sure what causes the difference.

This makes it hard to reliably check:

  • current 1h window usage
  • current 5h window usage
  • remaining quota
  • reset time / cooldown status

This has been happening intermittently for about two weeks. I first noticed it around 2026-05-01, and it was still happening on 2026-05-16.

Expected behavior

The usage indicator should be consistently visible in the VS Code extension, or the UI should clearly explain when and why it may be hidden.

Actual behavior

The usage indicator is visible in some Work locally sessions, but missing in others.

Environment

  • Codex variant: IDE Extension / VS Code extension
  • Workflow: Work locally
  • Account plan: ChatGPT Plus
  • OS: Windows11
  • VS Code version: 1.120.0.0
  • Extension ID: openai.chatgpt
  • Codex VS Code extension version: 26.506.31421
  • Codex CLI version: codex-cli 0.130.0-alpha.5
  • First noticed: around 2026-05-01
  • Still reproducible: 2026-05-16
