Error Messages/Logs

Fix Action

Fix / Workaround

What I've tried

  • Cleared cache and restarted → no fix
  • Full uninstall and reinstall → no fix
  • --disable-gpu flag in Terminal → gives "GPU access not allowed" error on this version
  • Cmd+R → partially works as temporary workaround but screen goes blank again
  • Mission Control trick (3-finger swipe) → doesn't fix it

Workaround Cmd+R temporarily refreshes the screen but issue returns frequently.

Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Environment

  • Claude Desktop version: 1.3883.0 (93ff6c)
  • macOS: Sonoma 14.8.5
  • Device: MacBook Air 2019, Intel Core i5 1.6GHz, Intel UHD Graphics 617
  • RAM: 8GB

Issue Claude Desktop shows a blank white screen on startup and intermittently during use. The app is running (visible in dock) but nothing renders.

What I've tried

  • Cleared cache and restarted → no fix

  • --disable-gpu flag in Terminal → gives "GPU access not allowed" error on this version
  • Cmd+R → partially works as temporary workaround but screen goes blank again
  • Mission Control trick (3-finger swipe) → doesn't fix it

Impact Claude Cowork is my main working tool. This makes it very difficult to work normally.

Workaround Cmd+R temporarily refreshes the screen but issue returns frequently.

What Should Happen?

Claude Desktop should open and render correctly on MacBook Air 2019 with Intel UHD Graphics 617. The app should display the full interface (Chat, Cowork, Code tabs) without showing a blank white screen.

Error Messages/Logs

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Claude Desktop on MacBook Air 2019 (Intel UHD 617, macOS Sonoma 14.8.5)
  2. App launches and appears in dock
  3. Window opens but shows completely blank white screen
  4. Press Cmd+R → content appears temporarily
  5. After a few minutes or when switching tabs, screen goes blank again

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue can be temporarily mitigated by using the Cmd+R shortcut to refresh the screen, but a more permanent fix is needed to address the root cause of the blank white screen in Claude Desktop.

Guidance

  • Investigate the graphics rendering issue, potentially related to the Intel UHD Graphics 617, as the --disable-gpu flag is not supported in this version.
  • Try to identify any patterns or triggers for when the screen goes blank, such as specific actions or time intervals, to help narrow down the cause.
  • Since this is a regression, comparing the current version (1.3883.0) with the last known working version may provide insights into the introduced bug.
  • Consider reaching out to the development team or support for further assistance, as the issue persists after attempting the provided workarounds.

Notes

The lack of error messages or logs makes it challenging to pinpoint the exact cause, and the fact that --disable-gpu is not allowed in this version limits potential troubleshooting avenues.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Given the current information, the best course of action is to continue using the Cmd+R shortcut as a temporary fix while awaiting further assistance or an update that addresses the underlying issue.
