Error Message

I am on the max 5x plan. I have been using Claude Code in VS code since a while now. I often use the Opus 1M context window model. Since my usage all this while I never got an API error saying that extra usage must be enabled for Opus 1M. But just now I got an API error saying that extra usage must be enables using Opus 4.6 1M. (I was within my session limit, extra usage was already enabled but was set to 50$ and extra usage was around 46$ before the API error came in VS code). When I checked on Usage, more than 50$ extra page were used and my session limit is well below.

I was charged for my extra usage and now it is not even proceeding without increasing the extra usage budget even though I have session limits and weekly limits within usage limits (i.e., all well less than 60% at time of writing)

extent analysis

TL;DR

The issue may be resolved by increasing the extra usage budget or adjusting the session and weekly limits to accommodate the Opus 1M context window model usage.

Guidance

  • Review the current extra usage budget and consider increasing it to a value higher than $50 to accommodate the Opus 1M model usage.
  • Verify that the session and weekly limits are correctly configured and not being exceeded, as the error message suggests that extra usage must be enabled for Opus 4.6 1M.
  • Check the usage dashboard to understand the breakdown of costs and identify areas where usage can be optimized to stay within the limits.
  • Consider reaching out to support to clarify why the extra usage was charged despite being within the session limit and to understand the pricing model for the Opus 1M context window model.

Notes

The issue seems to be related to the pricing and usage limits of the Claude Code service, and the user is experiencing unexpected charges despite being within their session limit. The root cause of the issue is unclear, and further investigation is needed to determine why the extra usage was charged.

Recommendation

Apply workaround: Increase the extra usage budget to a value higher than $50 to accommodate the Opus 1M model usage, as this seems to be the most direct way to resolve the issue and allow continued use of the service.
