Version: Claude Code 2.1.169

Problem: Setting "alternateScreen": false in ~/.claude/settings.json is being ignored. Claude Code continues to use alternate screen mode regardless of this setting.

Impact:

  • tmux copy-mode cannot scroll back through Claude Code output
  • tmux scrollback buffer does not retain Claude Code history
  • Only the current screen content is accessible in tmux

Expected behavior: When "alternateScreen": false is set, Claude Code should NOT use alternate screen mode, allowing tmux to retain full scrollback history.

Settings file content:

{
  "alternateScreen": false,
  "env": { ... },
  "enabledPlugins": { ... },
  "prefersReducedMotion": true,
  "theme": "dark",
  "skipAutoPermissionPrompt": true
}

This is a critical UX issue for users who work in tmux and need to scroll back through previous conversations.
